Harris' dizzying momentum
Imagine yourself traveling in time, back to the period before the May 14-28 elections...
For writers, commentators, and public opinion leaders like myself who were initially unconvinced about Kılıçdaroğlu's candidacy, saying, “It’s not too late to change the candidate. Continuing with someone who has lost every election against his opponent is too risky. Let's not take the risk!” was completely taboo.
Not only was it forbidden to write about the topic, but even mentioning it was met with strong pushback: "Don't rock the boat!"
The decision had been made, and it was final.
Questioning the decision within the opposition was equivalent to “giving the other side ammunition” and “being a spoilsport.”
Now, let’s look at the quick, determined, and bold reactions to Biden’s candidacy just three months before the presidential election in the United States, which is experiencing one of its darkest and most uncertain periods in recent political history...
The fate of the fast-declining Democratic Party candidate was sealed on June 27 during a debate with Trump on CNN.
The Democrats did not respond well to the disastrous debate, which was a great setback and disappointment. There was no “let’s keep it within the family” approach nor did they tell themselves "let's not shoot ourselves in the foot."
FIRST BLOW FROM NEW YORK TIMES
The first blow came from The New York Times, known as a pro-Biden newspaper, with an editorial titled “Biden Should Step Aside!” published the next day, June 28.
Although the elderly President resisted for a few weeks with statements such as, “I’m in the race and not going anywhere,” he could not withstand the growing pressure around him.
His close political allies in the party tackled the issue head-on, confronting Biden, who was determined to run for re-election in 2024, shadowed by the public opinion polls he refused to acknowledge.
Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House and a prominent Democrat, took to this tough confrontation without hesitation.
Ultimately, unable to withstand the pressure from media outlets close to the Democrats and party leaders, the “problematic candidate” conceded and had to pass the torch to Kamala Harris, whom he openly endorsed.
The speed of the political action shown in the past three weeks to convince Biden to step down was as impressive as the transformation of Kamala Harris’s new campaign.
The anti-Trump media and the Democratic Party’s strong propaganda machine, which had previously deemed Kamala Harris “too radical to win the Presidency,” immediately united behind her.
Believing that no alternative could be worse than Biden, who polls showed could not win, they gathered around Harris with renewed energy and rhetoric.
From Pelosi to Obama, all the major figures in the party individually declared their support for Kamala without any "buts" or "howevers."
DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY RHETORIC
Within a week, the campaign’s emphasis completely changed.
Unlike Biden, who asked for votes to “protect the U.S. from the anti-democratic Trump,” the Harris campaign prefers to label the Republican Party candidate and his ultra-radical supporters as “weirdos.”
The younger generation of Democrats believes that the debate over “pro-democracy/anti-democracy” does not resonate with the average person and that Trump’s fanatical “Make America Great Again” followers understand the “weirdo” label best. They argue that the public instinctively understands the potential damage caused by “weirdos” more than abstract threats to democracy.
It’s not a wrong perspective.
Nevermind America;
Even in Europe’s most culturally rich, politically experienced, and developed countries, the grand arguments of “anti-fascism and defense of democracy” no longer carry the weight they used to.
This was a heavily discussed and debated theme in the European Parliament elections earlier this summer, where right-wing parties saw a rise.
Kamala Harris undoubtedly faces a hard road ahead.
However, the new momentum and rapid rise she has gained from the wreckage left by Biden is undeniably exciting.
