Three targets of Haniyeh assassination
Netanyahu Targets Ceasefire
- Netanyahu's primary goal is to stay in power at all costs. To this end, he continues a strategy of open-ended political and military assaults in Gaza. The "day after" uncertainty has deepened contradictions between Netanyahu and the military.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration and the Democratic Party are uneasy about the prolonged assault in Gaza, verging on genocide, which has intensified domestic pressure, especially ahead of the elections. Moreover, Washington sees this scenario complicating relations with Gulf countries.
In response, the Biden administration proposed a ceasefire plan. However, Netanyahu resists, skirts around it, imposes new conditions, and tries to derail negotiations.
By assassinating Haniyeh, Netanyahu aims to eliminate the pressure for a ceasefire.
Netanyahu Provokes Iran
- Previously, Israel targeted Haniyeh's family, killing his three sons and four grandchildren. This time, Haniyeh himself was targeted on Iranian soil, sending a direct message to Iran.
Netanyahu attempted to turn the "Aqsa Storm" into an opportunity to launch an attack on Iran, needing the support of the U.S., the UK, and other Atlantic allies. However, the U.S. opposed this for several reasons: Iran was not an easy target, and the U.S. lacked the capacity to open a new front alongside the Ukraine conflict.
Seeing that provoking Iran might draw the U.S. into the region, Netanyahu made several attempts: targeting Iranian commanders in Syria, hitting Iran's diplomatic mission in Syria. Iran thwarted these plans with "measured responses" without declaring war. During this period, the U.S. and Iran reached an understanding to prevent regional war through unofficial talks in Switzerland.
By assassinating Haniyeh in Tehran, Netanyahu is trying once again to provoke Iran into responding.
Reshaping Hamas
- It's evident that Hamas cannot be eradicated in Gaza. Recently, various Israeli officials have openly acknowledged this.
Netanyahu aims to reshape Hamas with the Haniyeh assassination, hoping to install new leadership within the organization. By doing so, he seeks to weaken Hamas and ultimately ensure that a less experienced Hamas leadership is at the negotiation table.
Countering Israeli Terror
Israel, as a state engaged in terrorism through assassinations, poses a problem not only for the Middle East but for the entire world. Therefore, countries from China to Turkey, Brazil to South Africa, must unite their efforts regarding Gaza. The United Nations (UN) should be mobilized against this Israeli aggression.
The harshest measures should be taken to deter Israel from such attacks, and Netanyahu must be swiftly prosecuted and punished for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, terrorism, and assassinations.
Efforts to recognize Palestine should be accelerated as a countermeasure to Israel's genocidal, terroristic, and assassination policies. The recognition process initiated by EU states in recent months should be expanded.
