The threat of fascism grows in the US
With approximately one year left until the presidential elections, the threat of fascism is increasingly growing in the United States, the world's most powerful country economically and militarily, despite the current Democratic Party administration.
The roots of this danger primarily lie in two factors. First, the popularity of Democratic President Biden has significantly dropped; his intent to run again, due to his advanced age and fragile health condition, is creating reluctance among voters. The Democratic Party also lacks a viable alternative presidential candidate. Moreover, if renowned black philosopher and left-leaning Prof. Dr. Cornel West (Harvard/Yale) does not abandon his idea of running as an independent, he could draw some of the left-leaning votes dissatisfied with Biden, potentially affecting Biden's chances of winning, even marginally. The second, more frightening factor, is the increasing likelihood and potential of Trump's candidacy and victory, despite ongoing lawsuits against him for "inciting insurrection" and "financial corruption".
The possibility of Trump returning to the White House in 2024 is very alarming. As Jonathan Karl, ABC News Washington correspondent, emphasizes in his upcoming book (Tired of Winning), this time we are facing a different Trump compared to 2016.
A More Dangerous Trump
This Trump is different and more dangerous! Firstly, in 2016, while ascending to the White House, he had experienced politicians, bureaucrats, and military officials around him who could potentially restrain his absurdities and extremities. This time, Trump is surrounded by equally determined, far-right fanatics who are also experienced. Secondly, as revealed in his statements during the "January 6 insurrection" trial, Trump disregarded the fact that he lost the election, striving to stay in power at any cost. Trump is heading into the 2024 elections prepared for the possibility of losing, armed with this experience. Prof. Dr. Snyder, whose work "On Tyranny" attracted significant attention, says, "Trump is plotting not just to win the elections but to ascend to power (to become a 'sovereign'-EY)."
Thirdly, this preparation includes changing the security and judicial bureaucracy that limited his whims during his first term, planning to completely take over the state. It is reported that Trump has already begun assembling a 4,000-strong ideologically and politically partisan cadre to assist in seizing the state if he comes to power, shaped by the far-right think tank Heritage Foundation. In a sense, Trump has already started forming a party within a party, a state within a state, almost like a Gestapo. Fourthly, Trump not only wants to come to power but also, according to Snyder, plans to govern in a "state of emergency" and even seek revenge.
Reviving the Nazis' Rhetoric
Since launching his election campaign, Trump's language has become increasingly radical.
In his speech on Veterans Day last week, Trump used the word "vermin," a term used in Nazi Germany for Jews, blacks, Roma, Communists, LGBTQ, and other "undesirables" and "exterminables," to describe communists, Marxists, fascists, and radical left gangs living in the US, accusing them of stealing and cheating in elections. He claimed these groups would do anything, legal or illegal, to destroy America and the American dream. In his speech, after labeling them as destructive elements, Trump argued that these "internal enemies are more dangerous than external ones."
Prof. Dr. Snyder says, "If the danger is this great and the enemy this despicable, Trump will need to take action and hold accountable immediately upon election, in a sense, declaring a 'state of emergency'." Trump talks about deporting millions of immigrants and confining millions to camps. Camps are "exceptional spaces." The process starting with the confinement of immigrants might soon escalate to the suppression of the opposition.
