AP reported Cheatle's resignation, citing an email she sent to Secret Service staff.

In her email, Cheatle stated, "I take full responsibility for the security lapse. After the events that transpired, I have chosen the difficult path of resigning."

UNDER HEAVY CRITICISM

Cheatle's resignation followed her testimony in the House of Representatives yesterday, where she answered questions about the assassination attempt on former President Trump.

Cheatle described the assassination attempt as "the most significant operational failure the Secret Service has faced in many years." She mentioned that the agency was conducting internal discussions to fully clarify the incident and prevent such security breaches in the future.

During the more than four-hour session, members of Congress from both parties questioned Cheatle, harshly criticizing the agency's failure to prevent the assassination attempt and calling for her immediate resignation.

Following intense criticism, Cheatle announced her resignation today. She had been appointed U.S. Secret Service Director in 2022.
