UK, Ukraine to sign 100 Year Partnership deal to strengthen security ties, partnership
The leaders of the UK and Ukraine will sign a "100 Year Partnership" agreement on Thursday to strengthen security ties and partnership for future generations, as the British prime minister has arrived in Kyiv to pledge additional support to Ukraine.
The treaty will bolster military collaboration on maritime security through a new framework to strengthen Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Azov Sea security and deter ongoing Russian aggression, according to a statement issued by Keir Starmer's office.
It came as Starmer arrived in the Ukrainian capital for the first time as prime minister to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The agreement, known as the 100 Year Partnership, will deepen security ties between the two countries for future generations, the statement said.
The two leaders will also launch a new grain verification scheme built in the UK "to track stolen grain from occupied Ukrainian territories."
The partnership, according to the statement, spans nine key pillars and will harness Ukraine's innovation, strength, and resilience in its defense against Russia and foster it to support the UK and Ukraine's long-term security and growth.
The treaty and political declaration, which are part of the 100 Year Partnership, are expected to be introduced in the UK Parliament in the coming weeks.
Starmer is also expected to announce additional UK support to Ukraine, ranging from lethal aid to economic resilience.
"The power of our long-term friendships cannot be underestimated," the British prime minister said in a statement before meeting with Zelenskyy.
He noted that supporting Ukraine to defend itself from Russian attacks and rebuild a sovereign future is "vital."
"Through this partnership, we are creating a strong economy that works for the British people, a safe country that protects our interests at home and abroad, and a prosperous society," added Starmer.
