Maduro to run again: Venezuela sets stage for July presidential election
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro will run for a third term in the presidential elections scheduled for July 28, following his official selection by the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) on Monday.
Diosdado Cabello, the party's vice-president, completed the nomination process by signing the registration documents. Maduro, aged 61, aims to extend his leadership through the forthcoming elections.
In a primary election conducted within the PSUV, over 4.2 million members voiced their support for Maduro, according to Cabello. Embracing this endorsement, Maduro addressed his supporters, expressing his commitment to facing new challenges and vowing to safeguard the nation's independence, freedom, and sovereignty with unwavering dedication. "I have loved this country deeply since my youth and will continue to defend it with my life if required," he stated.
The opposition has named Corina Yoris, 80, as its candidate last Friday, setting the stage for the electoral contest.
Since assuming office in 2013 and securing re-election in 2018—a victory that drew international scrutiny for lacking transparency and fairness—Maduro has led Venezuela amidst increasing political tension.
