The discussion, led by Maha Abdallah of Al-Haq and Yosra Frawes of FIDH, brought together a diverse panel, including French MP Mounir Satouri, South African Ambassador Vusi Madonsela, human rights expert Kayan Leung, FIDH Vice President Alexis Deswaef, Prosecutor Johann Soufi, and former Belgian parliamentarian Simone Susskind.

Satouri openly criticized some members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for framing the Gaza situation within Israel's right to self-defense, challenging this perspective as outdated and misinformed. With the European Parliament elections looming in June, Satouri predicted a shift in voter sentiment and called for the EU to reevaluate its Association Agreement with Israel.

Ambassador Madonsela and others highlighted South Africa's role in advocating for Palestinian rights, drawing parallels with its apartheid past. Madonsela lamented the lack of change in Israel's stance despite international legal efforts, interpreting ongoing attacks as genocidal intentions.

Susskind revisited the 2015 Belgian Federal Parliament resolution advocating for the recognition of Palestine as a state, urging other European nations to follow suit as a fundamental step towards solidarity.

The call for European governments to take a firmer stand resonated throughout the discussion. Deswaef emphasized the genocide in Gaza, noting the disproportionate impact on civilians, and urged the European Parliament to condemn Israel and halt arms sales.

The importance of international solidarity was a recurring theme, with South African lawyer Leung and Prosecutor Soufi underscoring the global responsibility to recognize and prevent genocide. Soufi expressed frustration with international law's limitations but advocated for public mobilization through boycotts and demonstrations.

The panel concluded with a strong show of support for Palestine, reflecting a consensus on the need for urgent action and international cooperation in addressing the crisis in Gaza.
