British Library's employee data leaked
The British Library confirmed a data breach resulting from a cyber attack in October. This incident shut down the library's website for an entire month, following an attack on October 31.
In a social media statement about the cyber attack, the British Library announced, "We have confirmed a ransomware attack. We are aware of a data leak. It appears the stolen data includes our internal human resources files."
While allegations suggest that the ransomware group Rhysida orchestrated the attack, there are also claims that the stolen employee data might be auctioned. According to these allegations, the cyber gang demanded a ransom of 20 Bitcoins (approximately 21.6 million Turkish Lira) for data that included passport scans.
The library clarified, "We have no evidence suggesting our users' data is compromised." However, it couldn't confirm whether the data auctioned belonged to its employees.
A spokesperson for the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) stated they are collaborating with the library to fully understand the incident's impact. The spokesperson emphasized, "Ransomware is a major cyber threat to the UK. We urge all organizations to urgently implement our recommended robust defenses to protect their networks and minimize risks."
