Yusuf Dikeç makes headlines with unique shooting style: 'We may look relaxed, but...'
Yusuf Dikeç, who, along with Şevval İlayda Tarhan, won a silver medal for Turkey in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has returned home.
Dikeç and his teammates arrived at Istanbul Airport on a Turkish Airlines flight from Paris. They were greeted by officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and young athletes.
A Long Journey of Dedication
Speaking to the press, Yusuf Dikeç expressed his happiness at achieving the first Olympic shooting medal in Turkey's history. "We are thrilled to bring the first Olympic shooting medal in the history of our Republic to our country. We went to the Olympics with the prayers of 85 million people supporting us. We didn't return empty-handed. Our intention was actually to win the gold medal. We prepared very well. In February, we won the World Cup in Brazil. A month ago, we were first in a competition in Germany. Here, luck was not on our side. Reaching the finals with a record score showed that we are a good team. Despite all these setbacks, we still brought a silver medal to our country," he said.
Unconventional Approach Draws Attention
Yusuf Dikeç, who avoids using equipment like lenses, eye shields, or ear protection during competitions, became one of the most talked-about figures on social media during Paris 2024 due to his distinctive shooting stance. He commented on this attention:
"We may look relaxed, but inside, storms are raging. Our hearts feel like they might explode. We try not to show this. Since I shoot with both eyes open, I find equipment very uncomfortable. I believe in showcasing my own abilities. It makes us happy and motivated to be talked about in the world media. I didn't expect this level of attention. I was surprised. This year, I secured the quota a bit late. I was in the top 5 or 7 in 2024. After securing the quota, we won a medal. We earned this medal on behalf of 85 million people, on behalf of Turkey. This is a team effort. Everyone has a role, like in a theater. When you play your role well, something beautiful emerges. We did our best and achieved success."
Looking Ahead to Los Angeles 2028
Having participated in the Olympics for the fifth time, Dikeç believes he has represented Turkey well for 24 years. "Our next goal is the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. I mentioned this in a press statement in Paris as well. I told Damir, the friend who won gold, 'We are entrusting you with the gold, and we will take it back in 2028.' He laughed. We will win the gold medal in 2028, and then, if God permits, I think it will be time to retire," he concluded.
