England secures semifinal spot by penalties against Switzerland
In the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, England triumphed over Switzerland in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 5-3 after the match ended 1-1 in regular time, advancing to the semifinals.
In the quarterfinal clash at Düsseldorf Arena, Gareth Southgate’s England faced Murat Yakın’s Switzerland. Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead in the 75th minute, but Bukayo Saka equalized for England in the 80th minute.
The match went to penalties where England prevailed. Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold successfully converted their spot-kicks for England. Manuel Akanji missed his penalty for Switzerland, sealing their fate.
With this victory, England advances to the semifinals, while Switzerland exits the tournament at the quarterfinal stage.
England will face the winner of the Holland-Turkey matchup in the semifinals.
