Armand Duplantis breaks Olympic record to grab the gold, bests his own record in men's pole vault
24-year-old Swede claims 2nd straight Olympic title, and celebrates by striking a pose like Turkish Olympic shooter
Armand Duplantis broke the men's pole vault Olympic record to win the gold medal and bested his own world record for the ninth time on Monday.
"The world record holder soared over the bar at 6.10m, after earlier flying over at 6.00m to win a widely-expected – but brilliant – Olympic title, ahead of Sam Kendricks of the USA who won silver with a jump of 5.95m and Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis who took bronze (5.90m)," the Olympics said in a statement.
Duplantis, 24, set a new Olympic record in pole vault after clearing 6.10 meters in his first attempt and then raised his men's pole vault world record to 6.25 meters.
He beat the 6.03 meter record set by Brazil’s Thiago Braz.
Sam Kendricks from the USA won the silver for his second Olympic medal and Greece's Emmanouil Karalis went on to take the bronze to finish in third place.
Duplantis previously bagged a gold at the 2021 Tokyo Games.
The Swede celebrated his victory by striking the viral pose of Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish Olympic silver medalist shooter.
