UN notes Russia's ceasefire in Ukraine, says spokesman
The UN takes note of the announcement by Russia of a temporary Easter truce in Ukraine, a spokesman said Saturday.
cumhuriyet.com.tr"We have consistently called for a durable ceasefire in Ukraine, and reiterate our support for meaningful efforts towards a just, lasting and comprehensive peace that fully upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions," Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
His remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 30-hour unilateral ceasefire Saturday in the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin said the ceasefire would begin at 6 p.m. Moscow time (1500GMT) Saturday and conclude at midnight Sunday.
"For humanitarian reasons, the Russian side is declaring an Easter (Sunday) ceasefire today. ... I order a halt to all military operations for this period," Putin said.
Responding to the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv will act in a "mirror manner."
