BILD highlighted that more and more people from abroad are obtaining German citizenship and seeking German passports, with Syrian migrants leading the numbers significantly.

This increase in the number of Syrian migrants is attributed to those who entered Germany between 2014 and 2016 and have since met the requirements for naturalization.

In Hamburg, 7,538 foreigners were granted citizenship in 2023, marking an almost 20% increase compared to the previous year.

Previously, an eight-year waiting period was typically required for citizenship in Germany. However, the modernization of the citizenship law has reduced this period to just five years.
