Russian diplomat: Moscow-NATO ties unlikely to improve
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed skepticism about the possibility of normalizing ties between Moscow and NATO shortly.
cumhuriyet.com.trIn an interview with Izvestia, a Russian daily, Ryabkov stated that Moscow is open to finding common ground with NATO, but only under conditions of equality and mutual respect. This approach, however, has historically been a challenge for NATO and its member countries.
Addressing the potential for conflict between Russia and NATO, Ryabkov highlighted that the likelihood depends on the actions of the alliance. He asserted that Russia is prepared to defend its national interests by all available means. He issued a warning against those who underestimate Russia's resolve, suggesting they might end up on the losing side of any confrontation.
The diplomat also touched on the topic of peace talks with Ukraine, expressing a grim outlook. He argued that the West's unwavering support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's "peace formula" as the sole basis for an agreement makes meaningful dialogue impossible. According to Ryabkov, this stance by the West leaves no room for alternative approaches to conflict resolution.
Regarding arms control, Ryabkov mentioned the absence of any draft agreements between Russia and the US to extend the New START treaty, set to expire in February 2026. He refuted the idea that the United States could gain an upper hand in a subsequent arms race should the treaty not be renewed. Ryabkov emphasized Russia's commitment to not falling for provocations, particularly those that he described as characteristic of American policy towards Russia, assuring that Russia will ensure its security. Furthermore, he reiterated his stance on the possibility of severing Russian-US diplomatic relations, stating that Russia would not initiate such a step, and if it were to happen, it would be a result of Washington's decisions and actions.
