Qatar calls for full implementation of Gaza ceasefire
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani called Sunday on Israel and Hamas to start work on the second phase the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
cumhuriyet.com.tr"We underline the importance of commitment by all parties to implementing all the terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and starting the second phase (of negotiations)," he told a joint news conference in Doha with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
"There should be no compromises to engage in the second-phase negotiations," he added.
Bin Abdulrahman said negotiations on the second phase of the Gaza deal were scheduled to start on Monday.
“(But) there are no clear details about the arrival of delegations and the start of negotiations, and we look forward to seeing some movement in the coming days," he added.
The Qatari premier stressed the importance of both sides' commitment to engaging in good faith.
According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to delay sending his negotiating team to Qatar until he meets US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday.
Regarding Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, bin Abdulrahman reaffirmed Qatar’s firm rejection of any forced displacement.
“We are engaging with the Trump administration and we hope there will be no disagreements,” he said, stressing his country’s commitment to ensuring Palestinians remain in their land.
During an Arab ministerial meeting in Cairo on Saturday, bin Abdulrahman reiterated Qatar’s strong opposition to any attempts to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza.
Trump first floated the idea on Jan. 25, suggesting that Palestinians in Gaza should be relocated to Egypt and Jordan. His proposal, however, was vehemently rejected by Cairo and Amman.
On Jan. 19, the first six-week phase of the Gaza and prisoner exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel went into effect, during which negotiations will continue for subsequent phases of the deal. The agreement is mediated by Egypt and Qatar, with support from the US.
