Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Tehran

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was reported killed in an attack at his residence in Tehran, the capital of Iran.

According to Iranian state television, citing a statement from the Revolutionary Guards, Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh died in a terrorist attack on his Tehran residence.

One of Haniyeh's bodyguards also lost his life in the attack.

Iranian media noted that further details about the incident would be provided later.

Hamas confirmed that its Political Bureau Chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his residence in Tehran.

In a written statement, Hamas reported that Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Iranian state television had previously announced Haniyeh’s death.

On April 10, the Israeli army targeted a vehicle carrying several members of Haniyeh's family who were traveling to Gaza City’s Al-Shati refugee camp to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

In the attack, Haniyeh lost three sons and four grandchildren. He had previously stated that his children "did not leave Gaza and sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque."
