Canadians, Mexicans want dollar-for-dollar response to Trump tariffs
A strong number of Canadians and Mexicans now view their former US ally as an “enemy country” and favor matching tariff for tariff, a new Leger poll released Saturday found.
cumhuriyet.com.trBut The Three Amigos Survey, as the report is called, found that respondents blamed US President Donald Trump, not Americans, for the current economic problems. It was a clear majority of Canadians, 64%, and Mexicans at 59%.
“However, despite this distinction, 43% of Canadians and 35% of Mexicans still consider the United States to be an enemy country,” it said.
When it comes to tariffs, a whooping 87% of Canadians and 84% of Mexicans believe the levies on exports to the US will negatively affect their countries.
In the US, 52% agree that tariffs will hurt the country while 29% believe they will have a positive effect.
The survey included comments on the current Canadian federal election and found that Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberals will be victorious in the April 28 election.
“Regardless of their political affiliations nearly half (46%) believe the Liberal Party will win,” said the report. “Currently, 44% of Canadians say they would vote for the Liberal Party if the election were held today, compared to 38% for (Conservative leader) Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party.”
The survey on the economy was conducted March 28 - 31, with 1,628 Canadians and 1,013 US residents, and from March 26 to 31, 2025, with 1,003 Mexican residents, 18 years of age or older.
