Ad campaign pulled over child sexualization claims
The fashion giant H&M has withdrawn an advertising campaign in Australia that used a photograph of young girls under the slogan "Draw attention with back-to-school fashion," following accusations of child sexualization.
cumhuriyet.com.trThis Sweden-based company faced significant backlash for the campaign, which featured photos of two primary school-aged girls.
Critics, including Australian author Melinda Tankard Reist, questioned the campaign's intent. Reist asked, "Why encourage the idea that young girls need to attract attention to their looks, their bodies, and their 'style'?"
Similarly, Justine Roberts, CEO of "Mumsnet," expressed disappointment, stating, "It's disheartening to see retailers still producing inappropriate ads that prematurely sexualize young girls."
H&M responded to the controversy by removing the advertisement exclusively from the Australian market. The company expressed regret for any discomfort caused by the campaign, emphasizing its commitment to responsible advertising.
