A first since 2011: South Korean couples shake statistics
South Korean marriage rates increase for the first time in more than a decade. Country, gripped by steady population decline see a long awaited increase in the number of married couples.
cumhuriyet.com.trAccording to Yonhap news publication, the South Korean Statistics Authority shared data on the number of marriages, divorces and newborn children in the country.
Accordingly, in 2023, as 194 thousand couples got married in the country, there was around 1 percent increase compared to the previous year. This rate increased for the first time since 2011.
The number of divorced couples in the country was recorded as 92 thousand in 2023 with a decrease of 0.9 percent.
The data also showed that the downward trend in the number of annual births in the country has continued in recent years.
In South Korea, 192 thousand couples were married in 2022, lowered by 0.4 percent compared to the previous year.
