Cargo ship sinks in the Marmara Sea: Efforts underway to rescue crew

In a statement from the Directorate General of Coastal Safety, it was noted that the "BATUHAN A" general cargo ship, which took on water southwest of the island, prompted the immediate dispatch of KEGM-6 and KIYEM-4 rapid rescue boats belonging to the Directorate General of Coastal Safety of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to the scene.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR

Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş said that in addition to two teams from the Directorate General of Coastal Safety, one team from the Bandırma district of Balıkesir was dispatched to the region after the incident.

Governor Demirtaş said, "Intensive efforts are ongoing to rescue the 6 crew members, believed to be Turkish citizens, from the sinking ship."

Demirtaş noted that waves in the area where the ship sank reached nearly 3 meters in height and stated that operations were being coordinated at the Coast Guard Command headquarters in the Mudanya district.

Demirtaş added that the operations of the Coast Guard Command and the Directorate General of Coastal Safety teams in the region were continuing.

YERLİKAYA: "DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS..."

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya made the following statement regarding the rescue efforts:

"Immediately, 2 Coast Guard Ships and 2 Coast Guard Boats were dispatched to the scene, and simultaneously, 2 tugboats were assigned to the area by the Directorate General of Coastal Safety. A Coast Guard Helicopter, unable to reach the region due to adverse weather conditions, is on standby and will proceed immediately once weather conditions permit."
