Record electricity consumption due to high temperatures!
In the service area of Akdeniz Elektrik Dağıtım AŞ (AEDAŞ), nearly every day sets a new record for electricity consumption due to high temperatures, high humidity, and increased use of air conditioning.
cumhuriyet.com.trAEDAŞ made a statement regarding the increased electricity consumption caused by high temperatures.
According to the company’s statement, extreme heat and high humidity levels are impacting Turkey, particularly in the Mediterranean region, including Antalya and its districts, where the Meteorological Directorate has issued a "dangerous heat" warning, leading to significant increases in electricity consumption.
Consecutive Records Broken
According to AEDAŞ data, on July 19, Antalya reached the highest electricity consumption of the year due to high energy demand.
This record was surpassed on July 22 and again on July 23. On July 23, total electricity consumption in the region increased by approximately 14.3% compared to the same day the previous year, rising from 51,288 megawatt-hours to 58,606 megawatt-hours.
Reasons for Record Consumption
AEDAŞ General Manager İlkay Baydar, whose views were included in the statement, noted that they operate 24/7 to meet the rising electricity demand:
"Especially in Antalya, which attracts many domestic and foreign tourists, the increased population along with hot weather and accompanying humidity is reflected in electricity consumption. The heavy use of air conditioning in both tourist facilities and residences is causing excessive load on the energy lines. To provide the best service to our consumers and meet the rising demand, we have activated our emergency action plan. While reinforcing our field personnel with additional teams, we also use all the technology at our disposal to detect faults in advance. Our fault, maintenance, and repair teams continue their work with great dedication, sometimes in conditions where the felt temperature exceeds 40 degrees during the day. We continuously review our energy infrastructure and maintain our preparations to respond quickly to potential faults."
Baydar highlighted that there has been a significant increase in electricity consumption since the beginning of the summer compared to previous years: "This year, we saw an excessive rise in electricity demand in June, along with high temperatures, in Antalya and its districts. For example, in Alanya, one of our region's leading tourist destinations, the increase in new constructions in recent years and temperatures above seasonal norms have significantly impacted electricity consumption. This June, electricity consumption in Alanya increased by up to 30% compared to the same month last year. We continue our investment, maintenance, and repair work without interruption to best respond to the rising demand in Alanya and every point we serve."
